Why Kenya? The Safari Adventure That Keeps Calling Me Back

There are some places you visit, enjoy, and remember. Then there are places that get under your skin and keep calling you back. For me, Kenya has become one of those places.

I've spent more than fifty years behind a camera. My photographic journey has taken me through travel photography, wildlife and nature photography, and eventually photographing people, families, and special occasions. Throughout all those years, my love of travel and wildlife has never faded.

My March 2022 and January 2025 safaris in Kenya brought together so many of the things I enjoy most. There was the excitement of seeing African wildlife in its natural environment, the opportunity to photograph animals I had previously only seen in books and documentaries, and the simple pleasure of experiencing a part of the world that was new to me.

But an African safari is about much more than seeing lions, elephants, giraffes, and zebras. It is about the atmosphere, the landscape, the sounds of the bush, and the anticipation of never knowing what might appear around the next bend.

For a photographer, every game drive presents a new opportunity. Sometimes the perfect photograph happens in a fraction of a second. Other times, you wait patiently, watching an animal's behavior and hoping the light, background, and action all come together. And sometimes, the best experience is simply putting the camera down and enjoying the moment.

I returned from Kenya with thousands of photographs, wonderful memories, and a much greater appreciation for the country and its wildlife. I also returned with a desire to share what I had learned with others.

That desire became my second book on Kenya; Kenya Safari: A Guide for the First-Time Visitor. I wanted to offer more than a collection of beautiful photographs. I wanted to share practical information, personal experiences, and the lessons I learned along the way. My hope is that someone planning their first safari will find the information useful and feel more confident about taking that first step.

And now, Kenya is calling again.

After giving it considerable thought, I've decided that another safari adventure is in my future. My next trip will be different. This time, I plan to spend time with a guide friend and his family. I expect that getting to know Kenya through their daily lives will provide an entirely different perspective from the one I experienced as a visitor on safari.

Of course, the camera will be coming along. There will be wildlife to photograph, new places to discover, and undoubtedly plenty of stories to tell.

One thing I've learned over the years is that adventure doesn't have an expiration date. You don't have to be young to explore, experience something new, or follow a dream. Sometimes all it takes is a little curiosity and the willingness to step outside your comfort zone.

So, why Kenya?

Because the adventure doesn't end when you come home. Sometimes, it is only beginning.

If an African safari has been on your bucket list, perhaps it is time to stop dreaming about it and start planning.
